Modern History

A. HOFFMAN AWNING CO. | BALTIMORE, MD. U.S.A.

The Maryland Transportation Authority requested a unique structure above all four bores of the Fort McHenry Tunnel under the Baltimore Harbor as part of Maryland’s bicentennial celebrations. The awnings’ artwork depicts the Maryland flag and Baltimore’s historic Fort McHenry, and was designed to modernize the appearance of the entrance to the tunnels. The project consisted of 320 feet of awning panels-160 feet each for the east and west portal entrances. Hoffman Awning fabricated 66 individual 5-foot-wide, custom-welded 1-inch aluminum extrusion frames. The graphic design had to be chopped up into 66 individual pieces of digitally printed 13-oz. vinyl before being stapled to each frame. Fabricators had to match the tunnel’s curve exactly, which required each piece of aluminum framework to be hand-shaped and labeled, then trussed out.
