Awnings for Home

Awnings for Home – We know that buying an awning for your home can be a daunting task – especially if you’ve never owned an awning or window shade before. You’ve probably got several questions, and in this article we aim to simplify the process for you by outlining what an awning can do for you.

Why an awning?

Awnings and canopies satisfy any one or all of the following functional objectives: Energy savings; weather protection (sun, rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind); identification & advertising; or architectural aesthetics.

Today’s modern fabrics are long-lasting, vibrant, easily cleaned, super-strong and flame-retardant. Modern frame materials offer high strength-to-weight ratios and corrosion resistance. The proper combination of these properties will result in safe, durable, economical and beautiful awnings.

Energy Savings
Awnings for HomeThe benefits of awnings go far beyond aesthetic appeal. It’s true that Awnings for Home can enhance the look of your place of residence, but the real gem is that awnings save energy and protect furniture, floors and carpets from fading.

In a few short weeks you’ll notice the energy-saving benefits. In a typical home, more energy is transferred through glass doors and windows than through any other construction element. In fact, on a hot day, more energy comes through one square foot of glass than through an entire insulated wall. Solar radiation (infrared light) through glass is responsible for approximately 20 percent of the load on an air conditioner.

According to the study, conducted by PAMA awnings can reduce annual cooling energy by as much as 50 percent in hot climates, such as Texas, and as much as 25% in moderate climates, such as Washington, DC, compared to homes with completely un-shaded windows. The amount of cooling energy saved varies depending on the number of windows, type of glass in the windows, window orientation and the climate the house is in.

Weather Protection
Awnings for HomeAwnings and Canopies can offer protection from the sun, rain, snow, sleet and hail. The will direct rain away from the brick or siding surrounding your windows and doors. This will extend the life of the sealant around your windows thus protecting you from expensive repairs in the future. Our line of Basement and Stairway Awnings will even prevent water damage from flooding! Our awnings are also build to code to withstand heavy winds and snow loads. We do point out that it’s important to remove any build up for snow to reduce the potentially harmful falling snow!

Identification
Awnings for HomeApplying graphics directly to awning fabrics provides identification for your home. you can add your address on the front so you’re easily identifiable from the street. Why no also print your initials or even a family crest! Your imagination is your limit. We have hundreds of typefaces to choose from. Our graphics team will work with you to get your awning lettering or logo exactly to you specifications. Our competitors use vinyl decals on their awnings. We find that this type of lettering peels off after a few months. That’s why we use super-durable acrylic paint to stencil on your graphics. This type of lettering wont face, peel or chip, meaning it will last as long as the awning fabric!

Architectural Aesthetics
Awnings for homeCreative designers and architects can develop useful and intriguing designs for modern awning and canopy systems that incorporate shape, light, color, texture, graphics and structure, at modest cost. Most awning frames are custom made by cutting, bending and welding metal tubing, and fitting the fabric to the frame. With these custom methods, almost any shape and size can be attained and covered with awning fabric. Hence, the same surface can serve at least three necessary functions: weather protection, identification and architecture.

Extend your Living Space

Benefits of an AwningAwnings or canopies built off a patio or deck provide a cool and relaxing extension of your living area for you and your guests. You’ll enjoy the comfort of cool shade during the sweltering heat. Canopies also extend your living space, giving you more room to sit back and relax while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. If you don’t want an awning extending from your home all the time, you can also enjoy a retractable awning which retracts into it’s special protective housing during the bad weather.

Everyone knows that awnings provide shade for homes. But increasing temperatures due  to global warming, rising energy costs and tighter household budgets are bringing to light the very real role awnings and solar shades can play in efforts to reduce energy expenses.

An in-depth look at how Window Awnings can save you money

WindowResDomeA new energy study funded by The Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA), shows that fabric awnings or exterior shades can save homeowners as much as $200 annually by reducing the load on air conditioners (depending on where a home is located). The study, released this week, calculates the impact of awnings in 50 cities across the United States.

“The significance of this type of energy savings extends beyond reduced home expenses,” said Joe Huang, president of White Box Technology, who conducted the study. “When numerous homeowners in a community reduce their energy use, there is less demand for energy during peak usage, resulting in overall savings to utility companies and the public.”

The study focused on older homes that are typically smaller and less insulated than newer construction. Resulting data supports awnings and solar shades as “smart” retrofits to help make older homes more energy efficient.

window treatmentsFor example, the study showed that awnings on a home with single or double glazed windows in Pittsburgh, PA can reduce cooling energy 46-50% in a hot year compared to the same house without awnings. Correlating cost savings can range from $81 to $102. In a hot city like Phoenix, AZ the net savings was $193 in a typical year.

“The sun’s rays through glass are responsible for almost 20% of the load on your air conditioner,” says Michelle Sahlin, Managing Director of PAMA. “Awnings reduce direct solar gain through windows.”

The study incorporated information about weather and energy costs, and included a number of variations (cities, shade designs and fabrics). The amount of cooling energy saved varies depending on the number of windows, type of glass in the windows, window orientation and regional climate.

“Homeowners often ask how well awnings and roller screens will help to cool their home and make them more comfortable. So PAMA initiated this study to develop credible information about the performance of window shading, as we work to educate home owners and the industry,” says John Gant, PAMA’ s Energy Committee Chairman. “This research uses complex computer simulations for a wide range of variables to generate predictions of the energy conservation.”

So what type of Window Coverings do we manufacture for our customers? Below we’ll walk you through some of your options:

awnings for home
Simple Canvas Window Awnings – Choose a color and style to compliment your home

We know that our customers are picky! We are too! That’s why all of our products can be customized with hundreds of fabric options, valance styles and frame colors. This means you can really find a unique style and color that fits your home or business.

1. Fabric Awning with Steel Frame

awnings baltimore
Window awnings reduce the amount of sun entering your home, thus reducing the temperature of the interior, which in turn means you use less AC.

These are our most popular Window Coverings. Typically made from a galvanized steel frame which we weld in our facility at Belair Rd in Baltimore.
awning lacing The awning cover is connected to the frame via a sturdy lacing rope as seen here. The benefit to this type of awning is that you can hire us (or if you’re confident enough, you can do it yourself) to come out during the winter months and take down you awning covers. This will prolong the life of the cover even more. Then, when Spring is around the corner, we can come back out and re-lace your awning cover back on their frames. This take-down & re-hang service is something we offer to all of our customers. Ask our sales staff about a possible discount if you buy our fabric window shades and subscribe to our take-down or re-hang service.

You can have this type of awning with or without a hanging valance. If you do want a valance (or scallop as it’s sometimes called) then you get to choose the shape of your valance, as well as the color of the protective binding that we sew around the edges. Want a black and white striped awning with pink binding? No Problem!

2. Stapled Fabric Awning with Aluminum Frame

While typically used in a more commercial environment, we think these window shades are terrific looking if you’re after a more modern feel.

Stapled Awning
Here’s how we attach the material. We’ve left a section unfinished on the photo above so you see how your awning is constructed.

These awnings don’t have the soft traditional free-flowing fabric style. Instead the material is stapled onto grooves in the aluminum frame. This gives you a super tight fabric and crisp edges for a stylish, contemporary look.

Aluminum Tubing
Our 1″ x 1″ Square Aluminum. The channel you see on the top is where we staple the fabric to the aluminum. We use thicker aluminum than the competition for sturdier frames with less need for additional and unnecessary framework.

Outdoor Canopy

With an Outdoor Canopy you can finally enjoy the summer heat!

Outdoor CanopyWith warm temperatures just around the corner, many of us will be venturing out onto our decks, patio and backyards. Here on the East Coast, the intense summer heat is just too much for most people to endure. That means many of us are forced to hide inside the house, not being able to enjoy what the glorious weather has to offer. With an Outdoor Canopy or Gazebo Awning you can safely head on outside and enjoy the sun! Most studies indicate that it’s generally 10-15 degrees cooler in the shade than in direct sunlight. That means on a 90 degree day, under an awning you’ll be relaxing in temperatures of 75-80 degrees instead. What an improvement!

Let’s take a look at some of the designs we offer to our customers looking for shade solutions:

Traditional Patio Awning:

Deck_and_Patio (38)

Patio Awnings like the one above are our most popular type of Outdoor Canopy. The framework is made from 1″ round galvanized steel, which never rusts. The awning cover is typically made from an acrylic fabric such as Sunbrella® , RECacril® or Sattler.

awning lacingThe cover is expertly tied on by our installation team using marine-grade lacing rope. This means that during the winter months, the cover can be unlaced by us (ask your salesperson or call us for more information about our take-down and rehang service) and then stored away. This will prolong the life of the even even more! Then in the spring, when the last of the snow has passed, we can come back out and re-lace the cover for you.

Deck_and_Patio (31)
This above image is an example of a ‘California Flap’ patio awning. If you don’t have a lot of space above your doors or windows to mount an awning then we continue the valance around the sides. This means that your view won’t be block by the sides of the awning. Uprights can be mounted on the top of the deck (as shown above), on your concrete patio or on your deck floor – wherever you want them!

Gazebo Awning

Gazebo_and_Free_Standing (9)
This gazebo awning is connected to the house on one side, but can be installed wherever you want! Why not add a ceiling fan, romantic lights and even privacy curtains.

Our awnings don’t have to be connected to your house! Let’s say you have a nice nook in your backyard or garden you like to relax at. This can be a seating area, over a pool or a hot tub. A gazebo awning can turn that cozy area into an additional living space!

For a small subscription, we come out to you and unlace your awning cover from the frame, fold it up and give it to you to store somewhere dry and safe. Then in the spring, (typically after the last snowfall of the year) we will come by and re-lace the awning fabric back to your frame. This prolongs the life of the awning fabric by as much as 50%

Cost effectiveness of an awning or canopy:

According to the study, conducted by PAMA awnings can reduce annual cooling energy by as much as 50 percent in hot climates. Awning can also reduce energy costs as much as 25% in moderate climates, such as Washington, DC. This compares to homes with completely un-shaded windows. The amount of cooling energy saved varies depending on the number of windows, type of glass in the windows, window orientation and the climate the house is in.

“What some people don’t realize is that in most homes, more cooling energy is lost through glass doors and windows than any other part of the house.” said Michelle Sahlin, managing director of PAMA. “Awnings are an effective way to reduce heat gain and prevent cooling energy loss in households. This benefits the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the homeowner by saving them money on energy bills.”

Some Canopy examples:

Gazebo_and_Free_Standing (9)

This is an example of a free-standing gazebo-type structure. The customers of this awning wanted a permanent structure, but not connected to their home. They asked us to add a mounting plate in the center of the gazebo so they could install a ceiling fan. On the west-side of the gazebo, our knowledgeable sales team suggested to the customers to add a roll-up curtain. This way the sun can be blocked in the late-evening.

The above image is an excellent example of how an awning can be used commercially. We created this outdoor seating awning for Bowman Restaurant in Parkville, Maryland. You can see from the image, that the owners of the restaurant now have the ability to seat many more customers.

Installing one of our wide range of Restaurant Patio Awnings increases your dining capacity, which in turn increases your profits.

Restaurant Awning

Below we set out just how quickly you can return on your investment.

 $25 per seat scenario:

Let’s say your restaurant averages $25 per person. In the example set out below, a revenue of $25 per seat means that an extra 30 seats generated by an outdoor awning could bring in and additional $18,750 in only 25 days.

25perseat
Formula: Revenue per seat x Seats used per day x days used per month

So, whether you need a respite from the sun, want to beautify you home or need extra seating for your customers, A. Hoffman can provide you with a solution that you’ll love.
